
Not too long ago I wandered into my living room and was struck by an uncanny sight: the way that the light hit the curtains immediately reminded me of an abstract painting by Mark Rothko.

Even though Rothko painted abstracts, he reportedly didn’t identify as an “abstractionist,” being interested, as it was, “only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on…”
The photo made me wonder: What if the “split screen” device, so to speak, was essentially meant to be a window into the state of human emotion? Rothko painted numerous canvases with a similar composition, though it is a testament to his genius how they succeeded in conveying a particular state of mind.
